A person died Saturday after a vehicle reportedly seen recklessly speeding on southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in National City crashed and caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at 4:52 p.m., according to the CHP incident log. Witnesses told authorities a black BMW vehicle was driving recklessly and street racing on the freeway, then “spun out” and left the roadway.
The vehicle was seen fully engulfed in flames, with someone who appeared to be the driver lying on the ground nearby, according to the log.
At least two lanes were blocked shortly after 5 p.m., according to the CHP website. Around 5:20 p.m., the incident was classified as a fatality. No further information was immediately available.
